Release: Dave Min (CA-45): Walters Vote Will Lead to Higher Taxes for California Families
IRVINE, CA – Dave Min made the following comments in response to Congresswoman Mimi Walters vote for the GOP tax reform bill:
“It’s a sad reflection of the Republican Party’s priorities that they’re pushing a tax reform plan that will effectively bankrupt the United States, eviscerate Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid, and increase taxes for middle class families across the country. It’s even sadder that California Members like Mimi Walters, who are supposed to represent hard-working California families who will be particularly hard hit by the Republican tax reform bill, have sold us out in favor of the proverbial 30 pieces of silver offered by their billionaire friends and corporate lobbyist cronies.
“According to the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School, the alma mater for both myself and President Donald Trump, the GOP’s tax bill would blow up our national debt by more than $10 trillion, and result in anemic economic and wage growth. It is remarkable that the GOP tax plan increases our debt by so much, because it also increases middle class taxes and slashes spending on domestic priorities like education, health care, and affordable housing.
“Trump and GOP leaders like Speaker Paul Ryan and his sidekick Rep. Mimi Walters have repeatedly claimed that their bill would benefit the middle class and not the wealthy. This claim has repeatedly been debunked by independent analyses, such as the nonpartisan Tax Policy Center, which found that 80% of the tax breaks would go to the top 1%, while most middle class taxpayers in higher cost areas like our own 45th Congressional district in California would experience a significant tax INCREASE, due in large part to the elimination of state and local tax deductions (other than for property taxes, which make up only a small portion of SALT deductions for California taxpayers), the elimination of personal exemptions, and the capping of the mortgage interest deduction.
“At the same time, the Republican tax reform plan will cut domestic spending on education, health care, affordable housing, child care, infrastructure and veterans assistance by over $5 trillion, including over $1.8 trillion in cuts to Medicaid and Medicare alone. This will literally result in the deaths of thousands of Americans, and the needless suffering of millions more.
“This bill raises taxes for working California families, even as it effectively bankrupts our country and slashes our investments in social priorities like health care, education and infrastructure. The GOP is robbing the middle class to pay for tax cuts for billionaires. I call on Mimi Walters to oppose this bill, which harms the constituents of our community.”
