Dave Min (CA-45) calls on Congress to appoint Independent Counsel,
End Blind Partisanship

IRVINE – Democratic Congressional Candidate Dave Min (CA-45) released the following statement on the Manafort and Gates charges:

“It is disturbing to see that Paul Manafort and Rick Gates, key members of the Trump campaign team, were charged with conspiracy against the United States, among other counts. These indictments, which were approved by an independent grand jury and sought by Department of Justice Special Counsel Robert Mueller, a prosecutor that even Newt Gingrich described as a ‘superb choice’ with ‘impeccable… honesty and integrity,’ should deeply concern every patriotic American.

“Given the gravity of these charges and the wide array of news reports that Trump and his campaign collaborated with the Kremlin to help illegally influence the 2016 election, it is long past time that Congress appoint its own independent counsel, one that does not serve at the pleasure of the President. I am beyond disappointed that so many members of Congress have chosen to prioritize their party over the good of the country. This includes my opponent, Rep. Mimi Walters, who has to date refused to comment on the Trump campaign’s alleged ties to Russia and just last week said that she ‘fully supports’ Trump and stated ‘it is very important that Republicans back the President… He’s the president of our party. He stands for what we stand for.’

“This type of blind partisanship has no place in our country, not when the very foundations of our democracy may be at stake. I call on Congress to appoint an independent counsel with wide-reaching authority and true independence to investigate allegations of Trump ties to the Kremlin. The American people deserve no less.”

October 26, 2017

Democratic Congressional Candidate Dave Min (CA-45) released the following statement on Walters’ vote to raise taxes on the middle class:

“In her vote for the budget today, Congresswoman Mimi Walters once again demonstrated how out of touch she really is with her constituents in California’s 45th Congressional District. Walters voted for a budget that somewhat incredibly raises taxes on middle class Californians, slashes trillions from education, infrastructure, Medicaid, Medicare and Social Security, and increases the national debt by $1.5 trillion– all so that billionaires and corporations can receive a tax cut. This budget also opens the door to taxing our retirement savings. Walters claims that our tax code is ‘stuck in a bygone era,’ but this budget could turn the middle class into a thing of the past.”

Democrat Dave Min (CA-45) Statement on the Iran Nuclear Deal

Irvine, CA – Dave Min, candidate for Congress in California’s 45th Congressional district released the following statement:

“I am deeply concerned by President Trump’s unilateral decision to decertify the Iran Nuclear Deal, despite eight consecutive reports indicating that Iran is in full compliance and the lack of any evidence provided by Trump to the contrary. This deal took 20 months of hard negotiations, and has proven effective in keeping nuclear weapons out of Iran’s hands.

Trump’s reckless actions are creating an international crisis that could quickly lead to another costly and unnecessary war. They are also destroying the United States’ credibility in future diplomacy and encouraging countries like Iran to seek nuclear weapons.

When Donald Trump was a businessman, his inability to recognize a good deal and strategize for the long term merely hurt the creditors who lost money from his multiple bankruptcies. Now, these shortcomings threaten the lives and well-being of many millions. I call on Congress to immediately denounce Trump’s reckless actions and to take meaningful steps to signal our commitment to peace and international stability.”

Democrat Dave Min (CA-45) Responds to Trump’s Birth Control Mandate, Calls out Mimi Walters’ Record on Women’s Health

Irvine, CA – Dave Min made the following statement in response to Trump’s announcement on the birth control mandate on Friday morning:

“Donald Trump and his allies in the Republican Party continue their assault on health care in this country. Having failed in their efforts– so far– to repeal the ACA in Congress, they are now taking aim at removing birth control coverage for 62 million women, an important part of women’s reproductive health,” Min said. “It’s deeply troubling that so many politicians continue to prioritize the profits of the health insurance industry over the real life concerns of working women, most of whom cannot afford to shoulder the costs of reproductive health care without insurance coverage.”

Paige Hutchinson, Min’s campaign manager continued, “it is sad but perhaps predictable that Donald Trump, who is infamous for his horrible treatment of women throughout his entire life, would choose to attack women again to score cheap political points. It is even sadder that Republicans like Congresswoman Mimi Walters would go along with these actions although unsurprising as she has voted to attack or defund Planned Parenthood 12 times. When elected to Congress, Dave Min will be a tireless advocate for women’s health care and reproductive rights.”

Assemblywoman Sharon Quirk-Silva Announces Support for Dave Min for CA-45

Irvine, CA – Assemblywoman Sharon Quirk-Silva (Fullerton) announced her public support for Democrat Dave Min’s campaign for the 45th Congressional District.

“I know what it takes for a Democrat to unseat a Republican in Orange County, and I’m proud to endorse Dave Min in the 45th District because he has what it takes and shares my commitment to working families, educators and the future of our children. Dave is a thoughtful, hardworking, and principled leader who has already proven his commitment to listening and fighting for Orange County residents, no matter who they are. As someone who spent 31 years teaching in the classroom, I appreciate Dave’s work as an educator and his focus on building a brighter future for our children. I’m with Dave because he can win and he will stand up for us all in Washington.”

Dave Min said he is humbled to have earned the endorsement of Assemblywoman Sharon Quirk-Silva, a long-respected educator and leader in Orange County. “Ms. Quirk-Silva is a pillar in Orange County due to her incredible public service of teaching and serving in the California state Assembly. I share her commitment to helping working families and the children of Orange County and will work tirelessly to be an advocate for them.”

In addition to Assemblywoman Quirk-Silva, Min’s campaign also announced the endorsements of these other community leaders:

Mike Eng, Former Assemblyman and Mayor of Monterey Park
David Lau, Former Mayor of Monterey Park
Andrew Rodriguez, Walnut City Councilmember
Ali Taj, Mayor of Artesia

“Dave’s campaign is about bringing Californians together to build consensus and find workable solutions to local issues,” said Paige Hutchinson, Min’s campaign manager. “As he’s said from the beginning, he’s running a local grassroots campaign. The fact that he is receiving so many endorsements from local elected officials– and that he’s the the only Democratic candidate in his race with any local endorsements– is a clear sign he is the best candidate for the district.”

OP-ED: Don’t let Congress eviscerate California’s common-sense gun laws

OP-ED: Don’t let Congress eviscerate California’s common-sense gun laws

Author’s note: This op-ed was written before the events of last night. We are heartbroken by the massacre in Las Vegas by a single armed gunman. In the wake of the deadliest mass shooting in U.S. history, we continue to call for our representatives to enact commonsense gun measures that are proven to protect our communities.

We are law professors at UC Irvine, and we live and work in California’s 45th Congressional District, currently represented by Mimi Walters. More importantly, we are parents and engaged members of our community, and like our neighbors, we care deeply about the safety of our community and schools.

Orange County has consistently been ranked one of the safest regions in the country, which is why we were so shocked and disappointed to discover that Congresswoman Walters is pushing legislation that will make Orange County much more dangerous. Rep. Walters is co-sponsoring the Concealed Carry Reciprocity Act, which would allow people with concealed weapons permits issued by other states to carry guns anywhere in the country, including California.

In order to get a concealed weapons permit in California, you must complete a firearms safety course. And you can’t get a permit if been convicted of a felony or domestic violence, or been diagnosed with certain mental illness.

These are reasonable restrictions, voted on by our representatives in Sacramento and designed to keep our communities safe. They have worked. Mission Viejo, Lake Forest, and Irvine — some of the largest cities in our Congressional district — have consistently been ranked as some of the safest cities in the country. As parents, community members, and educators, we haven’t had to worry about concealed weapons — and the prospect that these might harm someone in an accidental shooting or an act of mass violence — in our schools, churches, or Little League baseball games.

Not every state has these rules. Eleven states issue concealed-carry permits without requiring a safety course. Twenty states will grant permits even to people who have been convicted of violent crimes. Under the law Rep. Walters is sponsoring, convicted violent felons and domestic abusers from other states would be able to bring concealed weapons into our Orange County neighborhoods, and there would be nothing our local law enforcement could do about this.

How big a problem would this really create? Orange County is home to some of the best and most popular beaches in the world. We’re home to Disneyland and other theme parks and attractions. In 2015, more than 47 million people visited Orange County. If even one percent of them brought guns, that would be 47,000 concealed and unaccounted-for guns on our streets.

The CCRA is especially troubling because there is no national database for conceal-carry permits, so there is no way for a police officer to confirm that a person carrying a loaded gun at the beach has a valid permit from another state. In effect, this would eviscerate California’s common-sense gun laws.

For decades, the gun lobby has argued that people from Southern California or New York should not be allowed to force gun laws onto people in rural Alabama or Mississippi. But Rep. Walters and the CCRA’s other sponsors are perfectly happy to force Alabama’s lax concealed weapons laws onto California communities. It is especially ironic that Congressional Republican leaders like Mimi Walters, who champion the cause of states’ rights, would seek to override California’s authority to determine its own public-safety laws.

The CCRA is clearly more about appeasing the National Rifle Association than it is about doing what is right for our communities. As parents who care about the safety of our community, we urge Rep. Walters to drop her sponsorship of the CCRA and vote against it. We encourage our neighbors who care about public safety to do the same.

Dave Min is a candidate for congressional district 45 and teaches at the UC Irvine School of Law. Jane Stoever, his wife, also teaches and runs the domestic violence clinic at the UC Irvine School of Law.

Democrat Dave Min (CA-45) Statement on Las Vegas Shooting

Democrat Dave Min (CA-45) Statement on Las Vegas Shooting

Irvine, CA – Dave Min, candidate for Congress in California’s 45th Congressional district released the following statement on Monday in the aftermath of the Las Vegas shooting.

“Waking up to the news coming out of Las Vegas this morning was devastating. My heart breaks for the families and friends of the victims, including my fellow Southern Californians, and for the residents of Las Vegas who have shown so much strength and resiliency in this trying time. They are all in the thoughts and prayers of myself and my family. We also express our deep gratitude to the first responders.

But thoughts and prayers are not enough. We must demand more from our elected officials than meaningless platitudes and ask ourselves what needs to happen before lawmakers are able to pass common sense reforms. As a father to three young kids, I’m so concerned and frightened by the constant drumbeat of gun violence in our country and by the normalization of mass shootings which are not, by any definition of the word, ‘normal.’ We are in the midst of a public health crisis and we must take immediate action.”
